Read Write Inc

read write incRead, Write, Inc’, is designed to stimulate and challenge children’s thinking and create enthusiastic, life-long readers and writers. All staff at Parkhead (teachers and assistants) have been received 2 days on intensive training from a ‘Read, Write, Inc’ trainer.

During ‘Read, Write, Inc’ children learn the 44 common sounds in the English language and how to blend these for reading and writing. They read, lively, interesting and fun books and have their own ‘Get Writing’ books in which they write daily.

‘Read, Write, Inc’ begins in Reception and finishes when children have completed all levels on the programme (level 2a.) The majority of our children come ‘off the programme’ in the autumn term of Year 2, though some will complete at the end of Year 1 and some may require further Read, Write Inc intervention in key stage 2.

The children are taught ‘Read, Write, Inc’ for an hour each day (20 minute sessions in Reception) and are grouped according to their reading level. There is currently a maximum of 12 children in any one group. Children are assessed on a half termly basis to ensure that progress is being made and they are working at the correct level. Having set and smaller groups allows for children to be taught at a level which challenges them and moves them quickly through the levels. Children do not struggle because the work is too difficult or get bored because the work is too easy.

A few children who need extra ’keep up time’ to maintain progress, work with a teaching assistant for 10 minutes in the afternoons to ensure that they do not fall behind their peers.

The Read, Write, Inc programme aims to enable every child to become a confident and fluent reader at the first attempt. Every child who completes Read Write Inc. learns to read fluently and confidently.

Watch Ruth Miskin (the RWInc creator) in this short video explain how to teach children to read using Read Write Inc.
