Summer Holiday Activities

The Summer holidays can be a long break from school and often an expensive time for families.  Children benefit from having a break from normal school routine but continuing to focus on the basic skills of reading, writing and arithmetic.  Within six weeks children can forget to do many of the skills which they have worked so hard to master.  There are many fun ways to help your children over this period (and which are easy on the pocket too!).

Top 5 things to do over the summer

  1. Visit a local library and sign up for the Summer Reading Challenge and read only six books over the six weeks to be in with a chance of winning an iPad!
  2. Look at the list of maths skills here that you child should have mastered by the end of their (current NOT new) year group and help them to practise those aspects which they find difficult.
  3. Visit Thornley Woods – why not take a walk down the ‘Black Path’, visit the bird hide and explore the pathways around the woods.  A great FREE day out – take a picnic to enjoy in the woods.
  4. Enjoy the FREE entertainment and places to visit in and around Gateshead and Newcastle.  The Chronicle list 57 FREE places suitable for children here.
  5. Encourage your child to take photographs of their activities and keep a scrap book of what they have done and enjoyed.

The usual school websites are still available during the holidays and other recommended sites are listed here.

Have a great summer holiday!
