Physical Education (PE)

At Parkhead Community Primary School we want our pupils to develop an enthusiasm for Physical Education, through a safe and supportive environment. This will enable them to attain high levels of physical and emotional development and good health. We intend to deliver high-quality teaching and learning opportunities that inspire children to succeed in physical education. We want pupils to be taught swimming to enable safety along with promoting cooperation and collaboration through team games to embed life-long values. Our curriculum aims to provide our children with the knowledge, skills and motivation necessary to equip them for a healthy lifestyle and lifelong participation in physical activity and sport.

Intent

At Parkhead Primary we aim to:

  • To provide challenging and enjoyable learning through a range of sporting activities including; invasion games, net & wall games, strike and field games, gymnastics, dance, swimming and outdoor & adventure.
  • Develop an enthusiasm and enjoyment for sport and physical activity to encourage them to lead a healthy lifestyle.
  • Provide pupils with two high quality PE lessons each week. Along with encouraging children to participate in extra-curricular activities throughout the week.
  • Promote as much physical activity throughout the school day, including the daily mile.
  • Enable our pupils to attend sporting events to encourage teamwork, competitive play and an enjoyment of sport.
  • Provide children with the opportunity to learn to swim in a safe and supportive environment.

Implementation

Our PE curriculum is based on the expectations of the national curriculum and is supported by the use of a scheme to ensure progression. Children have opportunities to take part in a range of sports and physical activities within a supportive environment where effort as well as success is recognised. Children are encouraged to participate in exercise through-out the day during PE lessons, clubs, outdoor learning, lunch provision and special events.

We also aim to provide children with examples of significant sporting figures and events to help inspire the children within PE and sport.

At Parkhead Community Primary School the PE curriculum is structured to provide a range of sports experiences during which every child participates to develop their skills and learning through competitive, team and individual sports. Through our provision children can aim to flourish at sports in which they have a particular interest or strength. Children with additional needs are provided with appropriate support to enable them to take part and gain confidence in skills, understanding and motivation.

Children gain experience of a variety of fundamental skills. This has a focus on agility, balance, coordination and fitness. Children take part in individual skills, group skills and team games, using PE equipment appropriate for their age. During KS2 children will have a series of structured swimming sessions.

Impact

Through our PE lessons, children are introduced to a variety of sports and gain the knowledge and skills to encourage them to promote healthy and active lifestyles and build a love of sport and physical activity. Giving real examples of sporting figures and events we believe will inspire our children to build on their strengths and encourage them to reach for their goals. We want our children to leave Parkhead Primary School physically literate and with the knowledge, skills and motivation necessary to equip them for a healthy lifestyle and lifelong participation in physical activity and sport.
